Parish Groups

Parish Groups

We have several active organisations and groups within the parish and, if you are new to the parish, this is an ideal way to meet new, like-minded people and find out about parish life.

In addition to those listed, we have groups of church cleaners and flower arrangers.

If you would like to become more involved in the participation of the Mass, we would welcome new Readers and Eucharistic ministers.

All the groups are always pleased to welcome new members.

Adult talks on the faith

Adult talks on the faith

Learn more about the Catholic faith.

For those interested in learning more about the Catholic faith, join us for a casual and ongoing discussion about the Catholic faith.

If you are an adult who has not been baptised or confirmed, this is an ideal opportunity to do so and learn more about your Catholic faith.

If you are not a Catholic and would like to explore more deeply what is necessary to become a member of the Church, this can offer you an opportunity to learn and reflect on what we believe.

Altar Servers

Altar Servers

Serving at the altar is an important and helpful ministry in assisting the priest in the celebration of the Mass and other liturgical celebrations.

What we do: altar servers help the priest and deacon during the liturgy, especially the Mass. They have several supporting duties to carry out, such as carrying the processional cross and candles, carrying the incense and thurible, holding the missal for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, assisting the priest when he receives the gifts from the people, washing the hands of the priest before the prayer over the gifts, removing items from the altar during Communion, and assisting the priest celebrant and the deacon as necessary.

Altar servers wear an Alb during a liturgy. Altar Server Training: The parish conducts training and refreshers periodically during the year for our Altar Servers. If your child would like to become a server, please speak to the priest after Mass.

Children's liturgy

Children's liturgy

The Children's Liturgy group takes place each Sunday at the 9.45am Mass (during school term).

Each week, the children join the Children's Liturgy leaders in the parish room before Mass. They celebrate and take part in their own liturgy in the parish room. They collect the liturgy book from the priest when he arrives at the altar and participate in activities such as making the Sign of the Cross, saying "the sorry prayer", lighting the candle, listening to the Gospel and taking part in a short discussion about the reading - all at a level which they can easily understand and enjoy.

They will usually do some colouring in, or similar activity which is relevant to the message of the Gospel, and then re-join their parents in church, processing up the centre aisle at the offertory procession.

The Children's Liturgy team is made up of volunteers from the parish - often mothers whose children have themselves enjoyed the experience of attending Children's Liturgy. Each volunteer commits to attending about twice each term (we have at least 2 leaders in attendance each week) and we all find the experience very rewarding and enjoyable.

The leaders, like all parish volunteers who work with children or vulnerable adults, go through the Diocesan Safeguarding process and obtain DBS clearance for working with children.

We do ask for new volunteers to come forward from time to time and have been delighted with the generous response which there has been. If your child would like to attend, please encourage them to join us any Sunday. If you would like any further information, please contact the Team Co-ordinator, Miriam Fenner.

Musicians

Musicians

Music is played at the 9.45 am Mass

Music has long been an integral part of the liturgical rites of the Catholic Church - liturgical music enriches and enhances all aspects of our celebrations. The music at the 9.45am Sunday Mass is led by a group with several different instruments. If you play an instrument and would like to get involved, please get in touch with the parish, and ask for Alison Jackson.

At St. Aidan's our aim is to involve as many musicians as possible who would like to play and we especially encourage young musicians to join us.

We have a group of musicians that plays at the 9.45 am Sunday Mass. We have members playing a variety of instruments - keyboard, guitar, flute, clarinet and violin but we are always very keen to welcome new members on any instrument, of any standard, and of any age.

The group practices monthly in the parish room.

As well as the 9.45 am Sunday Mass, the group also provide the music for the celebrations of Confirmation and First Communion and usually plays at the evening Mass on Maundy Thursday.

Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVP)

Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVP)

The Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) is a lay organisation which was established in 1833 by a young Frenchman, Frederick Ozanam, to look after the poor, the lonely and the destitute in his native Paris. Since then, SVP branches, or 'Conferences' as they are called, are to be found throughout the world carrying on this work by serving vulnerable members within their communities.

n St. Aidan's parish the main work of the SVP is befriending the housebound and the lonely by visiting them in their homes, care homes, or in hospitals or a hospice. As well as visiting people, we also take them out, on an individual basis, maybe a shopping trip, or take a group of them out to, for example, a pantomime or just for a meal and a get-together.

Although our funds are limited, we attempt to assist the vulnerable members of our community with material help which could be in the form of furniture, clothing and bedding, food, etc. whenever and wherever it is needed.

Do you know someone who is housebound and would like one of our members to visit them? Could you help in our service by sparing an hour a week to visit someone? Or would you like to know more about the work of the SVP?

If so, email us and we will arrange for a member of the SVP to get in touch with you. Our branch of the SVP meets every fortnight on a Monday evening in the parish room. Meetings usually last no more than an hour.

Cathedral Bereavement Support Group

Cathedral Bereavement Support Group

You are never ready for the death of a loved one. Whether it comes suddenly or as a result of a terminal illness, you are never prepared for the grief, pain and the sense of loss you experience. When the practical things, like funeral arrangements are dealt with, the normal feelings associated with grief are left with you. It can be a very lonely time.

With this in mind, a bereavement support session meets on the first Saturday of each month at Northampton Cathedral between 2.30-4.30pm. The sessions are broken down into three parts:

  • A reflection and prayer service in church (including the lighting of candles to remember our loved ones)
  • Light refreshments
  • Group sharing (you can join in or just listen)

You are welcome to attend all or part of the session, depending on how you feel. All who attend agree to confidentiality. The session is run in a friendly, caring and non-judgemental atmosphere to ensure all who attend benefit from the experience.

For more information, please contact the parish office on 01604 714556 and speak to Philly.

Young Adults Group

Young Adults Group

This group allows people between the ages of 18 – 35 to come together in a relaxed and informal setting to reflect on their faith through prayer, scripture and exploration of the teachings of the Church. It is also a perfect opportunity to meet and socialise with other young Catholics at the regular social evenings held by the group. We normally meet at 7pm every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month in the sacristy at Northampton Cathedral. Please check the Cathedral newsletter for more information.
